Mount Tambora is located on the island of Sumbawa in the province of West Nusa Tenggara.
From Bima to Tambora
You can fly to Bima (BMU) either from Lombok (LOP) with Garuda Indonesia or from Denpasar (DPS) with Wings Air.
We can organize for you to be picked up at Bima airport with a private car for IDR 1.200.000 (4-5 hours)
Or take a public bus from the Bima Bus Terminal to Calabai-Kadindi. The first bus leaves at 6:30 a.m and the next one leaves around 3:00 p.m, the latter means that you’ll arrive in Kadindi in the evening. The bus fare is Rp60.000 per person. You can buy the ticket before departure, not on the day before. It’s a non-ac bus and usually packed to the roof.
From Lombok to Tambora
There are several buses leaving for Tambora from the bus terminal in Mataram. The journey takes about 15 hours. Ask around at the bus terminal for the schedules, but usually the buses leave around 11 a.m and arrive in Kadindi long after midnight. These buses are Non Airco and usually packed to the roof.
You can also take a large bus going into the direction of Bima and get of in Cabang Banggo which is the intersection Dompu turn right and Tambora turn left. There you can wait for the bus coming from the direction of Bima going to Tambora. Or get of in the small city of Dompu, stay the night there and catch the morning bus coming from Bima.
From Sumbawa Besar to Tambora
Wings Air and Garuda Indonesia fly to Sumbawa Besar (SWQ) from Lombok (LOP), TransNusa from Denpasar (DPS).
In Sumbawa Besar you can try to charter a boat to Calabai, the Tambora harbor and then with motorbike taxi to the guesthouse. It’s time consuming though and difficult to negotiate a price. When we are sure that you are in Sumbawa Besar then we can send our boat to pick you up. No hassles!
The price of our chartered boat from Sumbawa Besar to Tambora is IDR 2,000.000 one way.
The price of our chartered boat from Labuhan Aji village on Moyo to Tambora is IDR 1,500.000 one way.
As shown on this picture you can also bring your motorbikes.
People coming from the direction of Bima, when visiting Tambora, often choose to continue their journey in the direction of Moyo Island and Sumbawa Besar, after visiting Tambora. It’s possible for us to arrange this on your behalf.
FROM Pancasila to the Tambora Guesthouse
In Pancasila begins the (off-) road up to the coffee plantation of Oi Bura, where the Guesthouse is located. With a 4×4 vehicle you can make it all the way till the Guesthouse. If you don’t have your own transport let us know then we can send someone down to pick you up in Kadindi or Pancasila by motorbike taxi.
